the less than adequate math student’s guide to not failing

Don’t even @ me, if none of these work. I probably failed too.

I’m kidding, totally kidding*

It’s that time of the year, and as always I’m late with a post that should’ve gone up earlier but had to be rewritten because I accidentally deleted it and forgot about completely but hey, it’s here now.

*I’m being deadly serious

These tips aren’t anything special, and I have no doubt in my mind that you’ve heard them before but you’re here, still reading, which means whatever *insert person’s name here* told you was a lie and you’ve come to me to save you.

Which is probably the worst thing you could do considering my math grades have been filled with D’s since the third grade.

Are you still reading?

Wow, you either have tons of faith in me or are just using this time to procrastinate. But I’ve wasted enough of your time so here you go, 3 things that might just save you:

Youtube

Now don’t get me wrong, I don’t have anything against teachers. I think they’re wonderful people and my English teachers give me good grades I don’t deserve but some of them lack what all my English teachers so far have had: the ability to get me to understand whatever irrelevant topic they’re teaching

Which is where Youtube comes in. And it won’t just solve your issues with math, it’ll save you in a bunch of other areas too.

Fall asleep during class and have homework assigned to you which you don’t understand? Youtube. Looking for more ways to procrastinate? Youtube. Trying to figure out how to achieve Cara Delevigne’s eyebrows? Youtube.

Just type in the topic and thank me later.

Holidays

This is for all you angels who did the bare minimum throughout the entirety of 2018, somehow passed and are now in a predicament because you know your lack of work is coming back to bite you.

Use the time you have during the holidays! Now I’m not saying everyday because NOBODY (me) cares enough about a grade to do that BUT taking some time away from your busy schedule mainly consisting of watching Gossip Girl reruns won’t hurt you.

I basically buy my textbooks in advance and then start learning the topics beforehand, not in a bunch of detail but enough so that I’m able to understand what’s going on.

This saves me from looking like an idiot on the first day because I’m able to understand more than just the first 5 minutes of the lesson.

Make Detailed Notes

Math is about all about practice but practice won’t save you 10 minutes before your final math exam when you realise you don’t know nearly as much as you thought you did. But the notes you made next to the million math problems you forced yourself to do will. Make them basic. Make them easy to understand, we’re talking 5 year old child understandable.

Just make sure you have them.

breaking bad help GIF

And that’s it. You don’t have to by me flowers or anything, besides, I prefer cake but I would like a shoutout in your valedictorian speech.

But if this advice doesn’t in fact save you, remember math is stupid, you’re incredible and you don’t need math or a grade to prove your worth.

General Mental Health Questions

Why do you think mental health has been a topic people avoided talking about for such a long time?

I think people avoided it, because they were told to. It was taboo, because people said it was. Everyone expected their lives to come off as prim and proper, there wasn’t room for mental illness. It was shameful. But now, I think mostly due to internet access and social media, our human connection has become so great that we realized, ‘hey this isn’t so taboo, there’s a lot of other people out there like me”. And I think that’s truly beautiful progression.

Do you think receiving an official diagnosis matters?

Nope, I really don’t. I think self awareness is really powerful and that’s the first step to realizing you need help.

How do you deal with family/people that don’t understand or believe you about your mental health issues?

I’ve really not come across anyone that has challenged my eating disorder or depression. If someone were to, I’d simply ignore it. I know my truth and that’s all that matters.

Does time really heal?

Time really does heal all wounds. There’s no set time frame on when it’ll happen, but yes one morning you will wake up and your pain won’t be the first thing you think of.

Untitled design (3)

Eating disorders

When did you first begin to feel like you needed to get help?

I never initially felt like I needed help for an eating disorder. I truly just felt like I was dieting and doing a damn good job. It wasn’t until I went to my general practitioner for help with my depression that I was put on Celexa (antidepressant) and began to gain weight from that medicine. It wasn’t until I gained healthy weight back, that I realized I had a problem.

How did your parents and friends react to finding out about your eating disorder?

My mom was fighting cancer at the time. She had 13 surgeries over the course of 3 years. She didn’t realize I had a problem, because she just was going through so much. I know, looking back, my dad was worried. He would say things like, “you don’t eat enough to keep a bird alive.” and he would fix me food sometimes in an attempt to help. No one else ever said anything to me about my anorexia until after I was healthy again. They said things like, “Yeah you did get really small. I was worried.” But that didn’t do much for me in my struggle.

What’s the worst reaction you’ve had to telling someone about your eating disorder, and how has that experience taught you to deal with negative reactions since then?

I’ve not had a bad reaction. I recently for the first time talked about my eating disorder publicly on my blog. I had a lot of women come to me and thank me for sharing. Some even told me about their current eating disorder they are seeking help for and they are in my prayers so fiercely

What was the turning point for you that motivated you to start your recovery journey?

I realized after my kidney transplant that I’d never took the time to allow myself to heal from my ED. I decided that since I got a new lease on life, I wasn’t going to let my ED creep back in and control my life. I decided I would be in control this time around and would be the healthiest version of me that I can possibly achieve.

What’s been the hardest thing about your recovery?

Self talk. Not allowing myself to talk down on myself. I practice looking at my reflection and say out loud the things I love, even if it’s hard.

What are a few things you wish you’d known at the start of your recovery journey?

I wish I had known that talking about it, is okay. That talking about it would lead to ultimate healing.

Body image

As you’ve got older, have you become more or less self-conscious about your body?

Much less self-conscious.

What was the largest contributing factor to the security/lack of security you have in your body?

Growing up I had a lot of people in my life that would comment negatively on my body. Their voices lingered in my mind for years and eventually morphed into my own voice. Beating that voice, changing that voice in my head, has been a life changer.

Do you think teenage boys or girls have a worse body image and why?

Honestly, I think it is probably more intense within teenagers in general. Especially now with social media. It’s so easy for them to see thousands of girls and guys who are what they would consider “average people” on Instagram that are “body goals” or “insta models” or whatever they put into the world. Those things are fine, but I think a younger audience is more swayed by that and it can be really damaging to a not fully matured mind.

What advice would you give someone with poor body image?

Love yourself fully. Find the motivation deep inside you to fight for yourself. You’re more than worth it. Your body is strong, it’s a temple, it’s a vessel. Take care of it and your body image will improve by tenfold. Speak your self-love into existence!

I started blogging because I needed a space where I didn’t feel restricted when it came to voicing my opinions and sharing my emotions and I found that, I found this amazing community of people who’ve changed my perspective about and opened my eyes to a lot of things.

I’m a better person because of those people.

From the very beginning, mental health was always something I wanted to talk about because it’s something very close to my heart and something I’ve struggled with for a very long time. Right from the get go I told myself that someday I would talk about my own issues, that, I would do it regardless… Continue reading FRIDAY 6PM

what to do when you lose motivation to blog|blogmas 2018

🌤ted talks

🌤read other blogs

This helps you figure out what kind of content you like reading and are more likely to enjoy writing, it’s kind of like a pick and mix at a sweet shop, at the end of the day the key thing to remember is that your blog is yours. You don’t have to stay stuck doing the same thing forever. If you don’t like something: change it. If something doesn’t interest you:change it. And if you find something that does: make it yours.

🌤make a Pinterest board of how you envision your blog and fill it with anything that catches your eye

2018-11-26 (1)

Are we friends on Pinterest?

🌤redesign your blog/ start a new one

If you’ve been following my blogging journey for a while you know exactly how often I’ve changed my theme in the past. Sometimes giving your blog a new look is exactly what you need and if that doesn’t work you can always start a new one for all your I’m-not-to-sure-what-I’m-doing posts until you figure out what you’re passionate about.

🌤redefine your goals

A lot of times the reason we lose motivation is because our goals don’t align with what we want at the moment, take some time to reassess what you want.

🌤take a break

Say goodbye to blogging for a bit. For some this is scary because there’s always that fear of what if I lose all my engagement once I’m back but I definitely think it’s necessary to take a break from blogging at least a few times during your blogging journey to avoid burnout and spend some time focused solely on yourself.

13 THINGS IN 13 YEARS|SELF LOVE SERIES

Heyyy

So this is a post that I’ve been wanting to do for a while, I’ve been doing a lot of self discovery lately and now felt like a good time to do a little advice post😊

1. FITTING IN ISN’T ALWAYS GOOD

As I get older, I’ve been noticing that a lot of people who I used to be close friends with are making choices that I don’t agree with. Being a teenager is hard and right now I’m at a point in my life where I really couldn’t care less about what other people are doing. Seeing a psychologist and getting medication and help for my depression and mood lability has really helped me see that life is worth living. Right now I’m too focused on improving myself and working towards my goals to be caught up in everybody else.Fitting in isn’t always the right thing.

2. TRUST YOUR GUT

I’m going to be straight with you and tell you that over the past 5 years I’ve gotten into a fair amount of trouble, but the truth is that I wouldn’t be where I am today if I hadn’t taken the chances that I did. Trust yourself.

3.PAVE YOUR OWN PATH

This is something I think almost everyone can relate to. You know what you want and everyone around you has their own ideas about what you should be doing with your life and it can be really difficult if you feel like you’re not being supported. If you have a dream or a goal then don’t let other people determine whether or not you try working towards it.

4. DON’T BE AFRAID TO REACH OUT

I still remember the first day I reached out to my favourite blogger and rolemodel Claire Cramphorn.  It was the first time I’d ever talked to another blogger and it was the best thing I ever could have done for myself. Not only did I do my first collab Girl Talk with Claire but I made a best friend in the process.Don’t be afraid to a) ask for help b) reach out to a blogger you admire or c) market/advertise your blog on social media.

5.MAKE YOURSELF YOUR EVERYTHING

Lately I’ve been thinking about how to some people my life would seem boring. I don’t go out much, I’ve somehow managed to become socially awkward and I prefer being alone. Most of my time is spent blogging, writing or taking photos in my room all whilst dancing to Lil Xan. But after 21 days of self discovery I’ve started loving myself again and I’ve decided to stop finding myself and finding acceptance in others and start loving and accepting myself first.

6.SELF NURTURE IS KEY

I recently learn that there is a big difference between self care and self nurturance. Self care refers to “… any necessary human regulatory function which is under individual control, deliberate and self-initiated.”In other words it’s pretty much hygiene. Self nurturance however refers to the act of loving and taking care of oneself. In short, self nurturance is self-love.  I used to put everybody’s needs above my own and I ended up stressed and unhappy because I had been way to involved with other people’s well-being that I had forgotten to nurture and love myself.

I’ll leave a list of self nurturance ideas below for those of you who are interested.

7.YOU NEED TO KNOW WHEN TO THROW PUNCHES AND WHEN TO ROLL WITH THEM

So…I’m notorious for being dramatic, having hectic mood swings and anger management issues-a dangerous combination. I also have very strong views on EVERYTHING and I believe things should happen a certain way and 99.9% of the time my way is the best way. I’ve suffered through countless group projects and it’s taught me two things a) group projects suck and b) you need to know when to throw punches and when to roll with them. I am extremely quick to voice my opinion about everything and I genuinely fear for people who get on my bad side. Over the past five years of my life I’ve learnt just how consequential that can be. Over the past year or so I’ve been trying to find the balance between being opinionated and my mood swings, which hasn’t been easy as I get angered quickly but I’m slowly learning that sometimes it’s better to let karma handle things. But be warned if karma doesn’t handle you: I will.

8.PASSION PROJECTS CHANGE EVERYTHING

DID YOU KNOW?

Seventeen Wishes started out as a passion project

Seventeen Wishes started because I was bored. Seventeen Wishes is what it is today because my passion fuelled something so much bigger. Whether it be art, writing, athletics or even blogging finding something your passionate changes your life completely. Trying new things is incredibly important and so is taking a chance on your ‘passion project’ it could change the game completely.

9.GOALS.GOALS.GOALS

Goals are necessary for success and happiness. Ever since I was little I would make lists, to do lists, things that make me happy lists. You name it, I had a list for everything. Setting goals not only helped me to stay motivated but it’s kept me from straying off the path I’ve set for myself. There are times when I’ve seen people on Instagram doing things that I don’t agree with, and just to be clear I’m not saying this to be rude or mean in any way. But the question that has constantly bounced itself around my mind when seeing this is ‘How could this possibly be helping someone achieve their goals?’. Now I’m not saying there is anything wrong with having fun but to me when I see people doing certain things I can’t help but think… ‘Why?’

I strongly believe that if you know the goals you have for yourself you’re a lot less likely to stray off the path of achieving your goals plus there is nothing more satisfying than achieving a goal you’ve worked hard for.

10.EDUCATE YOURSELF

This is one of the most important and rewarding things you can do for yourself. I love learning. I love reading and watching TED TALKS and talking about things that need to be talked about and not shying away from controversy. I feel like it’s one of the main reasons I talk (not in a bad way) and feel older than I am constantly. I’ve been told since I was about 5 years old that I was incredibly mature. When I was 5 my teacher told my mum I had the reading ability of a 16 year old. And it’s literally an integrated part of me. I honestly believe that learning is such an amazing thing and I would not be the person I am today without it.

11.OWN EVERYTHING YOU DO

I’m going brutally honest with you and tell you that this year my self confidence was at an all time low. I became  more depressed and I isolated myself from everyone and then I stopped talking, to tell you the truth the day I stopped talking was the day I realised that I truly had lost myself these past few months. And I’m not going to lie to you and tell you that it magically fixed itself overnight, it took therapy and medication and an unforgettable group of people to gain my confidence back. And you can bet your ass that it’s back for good. Nothing changes if you don’t believe in yourself.

12.DANCE PARTIES ARE NECESSARY AND SO IS SPOILING YOURSELF

Congratulations on owning everything you do. I’m proud of you now go dance to your favourite song because I’m proud. You deserve to spoil yourself every once in a while. Go on, turn that Lil Xan song up, we both know you want to.

13.SOMETIMES YOU FIND FAMILY IN THE PEOPLE YOU CALL YOUR FRIENDS

Truth be told, I’ve found family in the people I call my friends. I’ve found family in the blogging community and I’ve found family in my rolemodels. They’ve been there for me for everything and supported me and given me advice and I’m so grateful to have my friends and the people in the blogging community and I’m so grateful that I can call them family because they’ve always treated me like I was.

I hope you enjoyed this post because I had so much fun writing and I did take a dancing break which was extremely fun.

Love you

“I no longer force things.

What flows, flows

What crashes,crashes

I only have space and energy

for the things that are meant for me”

Things I’ve Learned in 1 year of blogging🌿

Heyy everyone

So this is a post I’ve been wanting to write for a while and I’ve finally gotten a chance so I proudly present you with:

1.BE YOURSELF

It’s easy to put on a mask. But it takes guts to be yourself. If there’s one thing I’ve learnt it’s that people relate and love honesty.Be yourself.Love yourself. And don’t be afraid to let your freak flag fly.

2.BE GENUINE WHEN REPLYING TO COMMENTS

I didn’t learn this one all on my one. But shortly after reading #Girlboss I started Seventeen Wishes and responding to comments in a genuine way and not getting caught up in seeming a certain way has helped me make friendships with other bloggers and get to learn more about myself and other people. I’ve learnt that people will always love the real you more than a mask🌿💕

3.DON’T BE AFRAID TO PUT YOURSELF OUT THERE

You’re a blogger. And you should be proud of that! Don’t be afraid to mention your blog or market or share your posts on your social media either.I know it can be frightening but believe me when I say it’ll work out, don’t be afraid to take a chance.

4.DO THE MOST

Blog about the things you love. And things that interest you and don’t be afraid to try something new if you find your current niche no longer works for YOU.

5.DON’T DO IT FOR THE VIEWS

There is nothing wrong with wanting your blog to be successful. But at the end of the day,at least in my opinion, blogging shouldn’t only be about the numbers. Make sure you’re writing for reasons that matter and are important to YOU.

6.GIVE IT YOUR ALL BUT DON’T FORGET TO LOVE YOURSELF

If you decide blogging is for you then I encourage you to try your best. Blogging is full of excitement and endless learning experiences. If at some stage it becomes to much don’t be afraid of taking a break, loving blogging is great but don’t push yourself to the point where you burnout. And even if you do experience burnout, it’s OKAY. Don’t rush the process of taking time to focus on yourself.💕

So that’s it for this post,I hope you enjoyed it ❤️

Lately I’ve Been Thinking…

Okay so recently I was reading this post by Alexandra Jane. And this was a very eye-opening post for me because I related to a lot of the things she talked about. I started Seventeen Wishes because I wanted to meet new people,I wanted to share my thoughts and opinions and have people share their thoughts and feeling with me:I wanted people to interact with.

Lately there’s been something off about Seventeen Wishes and tbh, I hate it.2018 is a new year, another chance for me to redefine what I want for this blog and for me,because this blog is a part of me as much as anything else in my life.

I want to follow people who’s posts I love reading. When I was starting this blog I followed everyone who followed me back regardless of whether or not I liked their content, because I genuinely thought it was just being nice.I’m starting to understand that I would much rather follow people whose posts I like and give them amazing feedback because I mean it.I don’t feel obligated to follow people because they follow me anymore, I spent the day unfollowing a few people because:they deserve better. They deserves followers who engage with them, love their content, smile with them, follow their journey. With the number of people I was following before I couldn’t do that.It was stressful. Now I can, and knowing that despite the fact I had to leave some bloggers on their journey temporarily I still hope for the best for them makes me feel better.

I want to post things you guys actually want to read😂Don’t get me wrong this blog is most definitely for me but I also wanna have stuff that actually interests you😂

You guys really seem to like the posts where I talk about feminism which leads to me rambling about being vegetarian😂But at the end of the day as long as it’s something I’m not clueless about *coughs and mutters makeup*

I want to learn how to take hella cute photos😂I currently have the iPhone 6 and the camera quality on here is amazing which is why I’m gonna try my best to learn more about photography so I can produce better quality photos for you guys😊Like if you guys follow Monika from Destination Humanity you know exactly what I’m talking about when I mean great photos😂SHE SLAYSS MY LIFE😂❤️❤️❤️❤️

I want a theme.A theme that won’t change for a very very long time. I’ve changed my name and my themes several times and even though I’m happy with my blog name☺️I can’t help feeling like my theme is too young and child like but still somewhat perfect for me😂Like, I want a more mature look because despite my savagery(😂😂) I am quite mature for my age but the savage side of me…she needs the childish vibes you know😂😉Any suggestions??

I would also like to follow more bloggers on Instagram and Twitter and Pinterest❤️❤️😂There’s mine,if you’re interested💛

And lastly, even though I’m not entirely sure how:I want to help out new bloggers.I know how scary it can be starting a new blog but for me it was really exciting.Getting 5 likes when I was starting out made me feel INCREDIBLE so I wanna help out new bloggers and maybe that can be my way of giving back to the blogosphere??

Any advice???Any tips,comments or thoughts?Let me know❤️❤️

Come get lost with me
